We have a location, and the means to do a dochu now, so if you're interested in joining in with us, I'd love to hear from you.

Birth of a New Butterfly- Furisode Shinzo Wakaba

Konnichi wa minna san!
It's been some time since I've update our blog, but life hit me with a few rocks and i had to go recover from the concussion ^^ But things are back on track now. AND I come with good news, exciting news!

Matsubaya enjoyed a momentous occasion last night. My lovely Kamuro Momoirobara debuted to a Furisode Shinzo. It was a private affair so not many people were there, but I'm so very proud of her. And got the chance to have the honor of tying her obi for her, signaling her graduation and new status in the Ageya. Her dochu to parade her around will be this weekend, I'm so excited! can't wait to have her banquet table built and laddened with food.
She excepted her new name of Wakaba and we all went to the shrine to ask for her blessing and good fortune through the rest of her journey. I'm sure we were both squealing in joy on the inside and trying our damnedest to stay proper ladies on the outside. Can't wait to see her in her new shinzo kimono. Our other Shinzo, Ume chan is due to debut as a Tomosode Shinzo very soon as well. I'm going to be a VERY busy bee heheh

Ookini san dosu for all who came out to celebrate with us, and to those who could not but sent their well wishes.

Hina Matsuri

This year was a first for me for Hina Matsuri, or better known as Girls Day/Dolls Day. Celebrations were happening all over SL for this day meant just for girls, sadly I was only able to attend one.

Hanafusa Okiya of Miyagawacho hosted a festival with Blue Lotus Okiya, and I went to see my good friends of Hanafusa and was joined by the rest of the Matsubaya girls and Kazumi chan. The turn out was amazing and I crashed several times. I'm sure I need a stronger computer now. heheh I couldn't take pictures, but thanks to Shinzo Umetsuki chan and Ryo kun, pictures were taken.

Later on in the day Matsubaya hosted an Ozashiki to celebrate Hina Matsuri. We dressed up in traditional Heian garb, as the festival itself originated in the Heian era, and climbed atop a Hina Ningyo set to become living dolls, even Kazumi chan of Suigetsu, our sister house, came to join in on the fun with us. Toting her heirloom sword with her as well! Who knew fearsome could be so pretty. Next year, I would like to see us dancing on a Hina Ningyo. ^.^

Ume chan told a story and afterwards, we unveiled our actual doll set and allowed our guests to take our places on the Hina Ningyo. I gave out dolls to everyone in attendance. I must say I have enjoyed myself during this festival and eagerly await Hanami.

My Kamuro Momo chan all dressed up in a Juni Hitoe. Isn't she just adorable??!
Myself, Ume chan and Momo chan togethre dressed like Heian ladies of the court.
I spy Kazumi chan dressed in pink and green. Momo chan choose it for her. It looks lovely on Kazumi chan
                                                             There was quite a crowd!
My dear friend Kikuyumi chan of Hanafusa Okiya, Miyagawacho

The court ladies gather together to share a kotatsu, and we do look like dolls *giggles*

Hina Matsuri- Girls Day/Dolls Day

"Hinamatsuri (Doll's Festival)" is held on March 3rd. This is a day to pray for young girl's growth and happiness. It is also called "Momo no sekku (Peach Festival)" because of the peach blossom season on the old lunar calendar. May 5th is "Kodomo no hi(Children's Day)," and this is so called "Boy's Festival." While Children's Day is a national holiday, Hinamatsuri is not. Most families with girls display "hina-ningyo" (special dolls for Hinamatsuri, see the photo below) and dedicate peach blossoms to them. They are usually arranged on a five or seven-tiered stand covered with a red carpet. At the top are the Emperor and Empress. The next step contains three court ladies (sannin-kanjo), followed by five musicians (gonin-bayashi), two ministers (udaijin and sadaijin), and three servants ending the bottom row in a five-tiered display. There are also small pieces of furniture, small meal dishes, and other things.

The custom of displaying dolls began during the Heian period. Formerly, people believed the dolls possessed the power to contain bad spirits. Hinamatsuri traces its origins to an ancient Japanese custom called hina-nagashi (雛流し, lit. "doll floating"), in which straw hina dolls are set afloat on a boat and sent down a river to the sea, supposedly taking troubles or bad spirits with them. The Shimogamo Shrine (part of the Kamo Shrine complex in Kyoto) celebrates theNagashibina by floating these dolls between the Takano and Kamo Rivers to pray for the safety of children. People have stopped doing this now because of fishermen catching the dolls in their nets. They now send them out to sea, and when the spectators are gone they take the boats out of the water and bring them back to the temple and burn them.
The customary drink for the festival is shirozake, a sake made from fermented rice. A colored hina-arare, bite-sized crackers flavored with sugar or soy sauce depending on the region, and hishimochi, a diamond-shaped colored rice cake, are served Chirashizushi(sushi rice flavored with sugar, vinegar, topped with raw fish and a variety of ingredients) is often eaten. A salt-based soup calledushiojiru containing clams still in the shell is also served. Clam shells in food are deemed the symbol of a united and peaceful couple, because a pair of clam shells fits perfectly, and no pair but the original pair can do so.
Families generally start to display the dolls in February and take them down immediately after the festival. Superstition says that leaving the dolls past March 4 will result in a late marriage for the daughter.

This year for Hina Matsuri, Hanafusa Okiya of Miyagawacho and the Blue Lotus Okiya will be hosting a joint festival togethe. Some of us from Matsubaya will be dressing up in the old heian style, the era from which this festival came from to attend the festivities. Afterwards at 3pm SLT we will host a Ozashiki and a Hina Ningyo showing. I'll also be sending out dolls to everyone who sends me a request for one. So if you'd like a doll, please send me an IM or come to Matsubaya and drop me a NC in our mailbox inside the Ageya/Yukakku.

The Grand Opening For Ichikawa Atelier

Matsubaya is proud to welcome the Ichikawa Atelier, owned by one of our very own, Ryo kun. It's located inside the Ageya/Yukakku and hosts a variety of Japanese themed items. Matsubaya was hired for the Grand Opening Party and a lavish banquet table was set up with a spread of food and drinks. The land was explored and as the ribbon was cut, I could feel the excitement building within me as i sat hidden behind the fusama doors, readying myself to go on stage. It was such a lovely party and, I got the surprise of the evening as i gave birth to my twin babies, Izanagi my son, and Izanami my daughter, just as the festivities began to wind down. It was a day filled with excitement. and there will be many more days like it.

Congratulations to you Ryo kun, may your shop flourish and prosper
